It was near closing time when I showed up at the counter.

The clerk did not try to hide her irritation.

I felt like pointing to the clock and reminding her that the store was open for another seven minutes. Instead I apologized for running in at the last minute and told her I hoped it didnÆt cause her to be late for whatever she had going on after work.

Recognizing that I had picked up on her frustration, she responded, ôActually I should apologize to you. ItÆs just that my mother was taken to the hospital today. IÆm really worried about her, and IÆm going to see her just as soon as I get off work.ö

Then she added, ôThanks for being so understanding.ö

Everybody we meet is dealing with something. No matter how calm, serene or happy we appear, weÆre all struggling.

One afternoon I stopped by the office of a woman who had been working extraordinarily hard for our company. She was quite intense, laboring over her word processor, when I said, ôdonÆt want to interrupt, but just wanted you to know youÆre doing a great job, I appreciate you.ö

Her face brightened.

ôMort, youÆve made my day.ö She said.

And it had been so easy. It didnÆt cost me anything to pass along that genuine compliment. But in a world where criticism is abundant and praise is scarce, it had meant a lot to her.

So, if someone seems surly or abrupt todayûa clerk, a boss, a spouseûimagine what they may be dealing with.

Then go ahead and make their day.
