Reb Noson Sternhartz was born in 1780 in Nemirov, a small town near Breslov in the Ukraine. Despite his parents' wishes he became a serious student of Chassidism and in 1802 found his mentor, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810). In time, Reb Noson became Rebbe Nachman's foremost disciple, as well as his scribe. Reb Noson devoted his own life to ensuring that the Rebbe's guiding light was firmly established and spread throughout the world. His works include a monumental eight-volume commentary on the Rebbe's teachings, Likutey Halakhot and two volumes of prayers based on the Rebbe's lessons, Likutey Tefilot. More than anyone else, Reb Noson was responsible for preserving Rebbe Nachman's teachings and for shaping the movement that follows the path that was set out by the Rebbe.
