#1 Self-Help Publisher -- Changing Lives One Book at a Time

Health Communications Inc. (HCI) is an award-winning industry leader, publishing self-help bestsellers for over 30 years.

MISSION STATEMENT
We are dedicated to providing our readers with inspiration, information and hope. Our goal — to change the lives of our readers, one book at a time.

COMPANY HISTORY
HCI began in 1977 as a publisher of pamphlets and magazines for professionals in the recovery and addiction treatment fields. In 1983 HCI published one of the landmark books in recovery, Adult Children of Alcoholics by Dr. Janet Woititz, virtually spawning the ACOA movement. Still a perennial seller, Woititz’s book inspired a new way of looking at alcoholism by revealing its life-long effects on the next generation. Adult Children of Alcoholics was the first in a string of New York Times bestsellers for HCI, including John Bradshaw's groundbreaking, Healing the Shame that Binds You, a staple on every self-help list and an Oprah favorite. In 1993, HCI began publishing the legendary Chicken Soup for the Soul series. History was made when motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen presented a particular manuscript to HCI president and publisher, Peter Vegso. It had been rejected by more than 133 publishers. The manuscript became Chicken Soup for the Soul, 101 Stories, an instant classic, kicking off the phenomenal Chicken Soup series. In keeping with its trademark storytelling collections, HCI has launched The Ultimate series adding new features such as valuable advice from experts and stunning photography.

Expansion into Recovery and Addiction Communities
HCI's pioneering role serving the addictions community has grown to include a Conference Division with online CEUs and a Magazine Division. Currently, Counselor Magazine, brings new voices to researchers and counselors, as well as those in or with loved ones in recovery. HCI's publishing success with professionals has expanded to include distribution partnerships with Central Recovery Press (CRP) and Sex Addicts Anonymous® (SAA).
